Travelling to and from St Peter’s School

The School Run

The roads around our school are very busy and parking is extremely limited. We encourage parents and children to minimise car use wherever possible by walking, scooting or cycling to school.

Travelling by car

The school car park is for the use of staff, blue badge holders and authorised groups ONLY. If you hold a disabled blue badge then please speak to the school office who will arrange for you to have access to the car park.

Parking, or waiting, on any part of the school access road SEVERELY limits the access for emergency vehicles and for the safety of our entire school community is not allowed.

We understand that sometimes there is no alternative to driving to school. Where a car must be used we ask parents to drive only part of the way, and drop their child off away from the school so that some of the journey can be walked or scooted. We have a 10 minute walk zone marked on our map (in the below section) and we also have suggested Park & Stride routes for parents to use.

If you do have to drive your child to school and stop in the near vicinity we ask that you consider car sharing arrangements with other parents wherever possible. It is not acceptable to park or wait on double yellow lines, on the school zigzags or across residential driveways for any period of time.

Walking to school

St Peter’s can be easily reached by the pedestrianised part of Linden Pit Path which joins Ashtead and Leatherhead and is an easy walk from most parts of Ashtead and Leatherhead.

We've created a map using TravelTime that shows the areas that are within an average 15 minute (blue area) or 10 minute (red area) walk of St Peter's. If you live within this area, we encourage you to try and walk as often as possible.

Park & Stride Options

Park & Stride is a simple idea for families who live far away to still enjoy the benefits of walking to school. Families park in a designated location and follow a walking route of no more than around 10- 12 mins (shorter with scooters!) to school. It reduces traffic and congestion around the school gates whilst allowing children the chance to get active for the last part of their journey.

Our Park & Stride location is the FREE public car park on the A24 Leatherhead Bypass and there are 2 possible walking routes.

Route A

Is approx 0.8 miles and would take 10-12 minutes to walk, although this would be shorter if scooting. The route has one, traffic light controlled, crossing and no stairs so is accessible for wheelchairs, prams and bikes.

From the car park, cross the road and follow the pavement alongside the A24 until you reach the traffic light controlled crossing at the crossroads of the A24 and Grange Road. Cross over onto Grange Road and follow the road all the way to school.

Park & Stride Route A

Route B

Although Route B is shorter at approx. 0.6 miles and 10 mins walk time, it has a road crossing which is not traffic light controlled, so parents must use caution. Access to the A243/M25 pedestrian footbridge is also via steps. Scooters that can be carried would be fine, but this route is not suitable for wheelchairs, prams and heavy bikes.

From the car park, cross the road and follow the pavement alongside the A243 until you reach the footbridge stairs. Join the footbridge which takes you onto the Linden Pit Path and directly to the school gates.

Scooting & Cycling to School

We provide shelters for bikes and scooters at school for children and adults that wish to use them. We are also happy for children to keep their cycle helmets (named please) with their school bags in the cloakrooms. If children are cycling in wet weather, they are welcome to change out of their outdoor gear when they arrive at school.

We've created a map using TravelTime that shows the areas that are within an average 10-minute cycle ride of St Peter's. If you live within this area, we encourage you to try and cycle as often as possible.

Areas that can reach St Peter's (marked using bike icon) in approx. 10 minutes

If you or your child are scooting or cycling to school we ask that:

  • You ride sensibly and safely and to follow the Highway Code
  • You wear a cycle helmet
  • You check that any bicycle or scooter is roadworthy and regularly maintained
  • You behave in an appropriate manner and consider the needs of others when cycling or scooting
  • You ensure that you be seen by other road users, by using lights and wearing high-visibility clothing, as appropriate.

Please note that:

  • The decision as to whether a child is competent to cycle, scoot or walk safely to and from school rests with the parent(s)/carer(s). The school has no liability for any consequences of that decision.
  • Parents are advised to consider appropriate insurance cover (check home insurance) as the school is not liable for, and its insurance does not cover, any loss or damage to bicycles and scooters being used on the way to or from school or at school.

There are also regular opportunities for children to take part in scooter and cycling training, which is subsided by school.
